Your BAH does not change between these duty stations. Quantico ($2,955), Fort Meade ($2,901), and Pax River ($2,406) are separate, lower-paying MHAs. DC Metro BAH rose 8% in 2026 — well above the 4.2% national average. Critical context for JBM-HH specifically: Arlington is one of the most expensive housing markets in the country. Even with the high DC Metro BAH, families trying to live in Arlington proper (Clarendon, Ballston, Pentagon City, Crystal City) often pay above BAH.

Three different state tax regimes touch JBM-HH families. Virginia taxes military pay (2% to 5.75%) but exempts up to $40,000 of military retirement income for 55+ (phased increase scheduled). JBM-HH's three sites give you genuinely different neighborhood calculus. For Fort Myer (Arlington), proximity to the West Gate or the Pentagon Metro is the win. For Henderson Hall (immediately south of Fort Myer), the same Arlington neighborhoods apply. For Fort McNair (DC), Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, Southwest Waterfront, and the Wharf are walking or short Metro distance. This is one of the most Metro-accessible military assignments in the country — many JBM-HH families operate as one-car or no-car households, which materially changes the rent-to-BAH math. The Amazon HQ2 / National Landing footprint has pushed Crystal City and Pentagon City rents past most BAH ranks; further-out Northern Virginia (Springfield, Burke, Falls Church) is where the math works for most families.

JBM-HH families have access to three of the strongest large public school districts in the country: Arlington Public Schools (APS) with about 28,000 students, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) with about 16,000 students, and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) with about 180,000 students — the 11th-largest district in the U.S. All three are nationally recognized for STEM, magnet, IB, and AP programs. Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) covers Woodbridge for families further south. The trade-off is that housing in these zones is extremely expensive and competitive, and school assignment is address-specific. Find your school first, then your house.

The on-base medical facility is the Andrew Rader U.S. Army Health Clinic at Fort Myer — outpatient/primary care only, with limited M-F daytime hours and no ER. Fort McNair has a satellite clinic for basic vision and hearing only. JBM-HH families rely on the broader NCR military medical network for specialty care and the civilian TRICARE network for emergencies. The good news: in the NCR, both networks are genuinely deep, and Walter Reed NMMC (the DoD flagship hospital) is just 8 miles north.

JBM-HH MWR runs a respectable program despite the constrained urban footprint of three small sites. Fort Myer's MWR is the largest of the three — anchored by Patton Hall Pool Complex, the Fort Myer Fitness Center, and the historic officers' clubs. Henderson Hall has Marine MWR. Fort McNair has its own fitness center and a small marina on the Washington Channel. Most JBM-HH MWR consumption happens off base — the Smithsonian system is free, the National Mall is 5-10 minutes away, and Arlington National Cemetery is on the east property line.

Honest take: JBM-HH is about as Metro-accessible as it gets for a military installation. Fort Myer sits between the Rosslyn-Ballston Metro corridor (Orange/Silver Lines) and the Pentagon City/Crystal City corridor (Blue/Yellow Lines). The Pentagon is 1 mile away — many service members literally walk or bike to Pentagon meetings via the Henry Gate (see warn callout). Henderson Hall families use Pentagon City Metro. Fort McNair is two blocks from Waterfront Metro on the Green Line. The Metro accessibility makes a one-car or no-car lifestyle genuinely viable here — rare for a military assignment, and a significant lifestyle and financial advantage given Arlington gas prices and parking costs.

JBM-HH sits at the literal center of the NCR. For dual-military couples, this is unmatched — the Pentagon is 1 mile, JBAB is 5 miles, Fort Belvoir is 17 miles, Andrews is 12 miles, Walter Reed is 8 miles. For spouse careers, the federal civil service, defense contracting, healthcare, and university research ecosystems are all within Metro reach. JBM-HH is one of the most Metro-accessible military assignments in the country — Fort Myer is between the Orange/Silver and Blue/Yellow Metro corridors, Henderson Hall is walking distance from Pentagon City Metro, and Fort McNair is two blocks from Waterfront Metro (Green Line).
